Its no joke. A Canadian company paid nearly $50/lb at the Cup of Excellence auction for a Brazilian coffee - smashing the previous record set by a Japanese company.

The Globe and Mail wrote:It was awarded a record 95.85 per cent by an international jury, which chose it in November from among 553 entries after several rounds and weeks of tasting.

The international jury variously described Mr. Pereira's coffee as "sensual, juicy and elegant" and tasting of "fat peaches, tangerine and pineapple."

The auction price was about 48 times higher than that paid for export-grade Brazilian green coffee, of which about 22.5 million bags were shipped last year. Exports of specialty coffee were less than one million bags.

So today I wrote to Caffe Artigiano to see if they are selling the whole bean coffee via mail order. Here's what Vince Piccolo, the owner, had to say:

At this moment we will not be selling this coffee in whole bean. The demand is so high from our customers that, I believe we will only be selling this by the cup in our cafes.

I want to take care of our customers and give them the option of having a
rare, extremely wonderful coffee. Sorry, the demand right now is extreme.

The coffee doesn't arrive till April 1st. I may change my mind. Please
check back with me and see how the story develops. We also have many Cup of Excellence coffees. Check our site out in the upcoming months when we add our Cup of Excellence coffees to our shopping cart.

I'll cc this email to our office where we'll keep your name on a list.

    Sincerely,
    Vince Piccolo
