The manufacture of alcohol-primarily spirits in India has really exploded. I have Googled India's spirits and frankly I am a bit overwhelmed. Is there a particular spirit-i.e. gin or whisky or liquor that is available in India and not typically exported? Any response is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I'm a fan of several of the Amrut whiskeys and they've received some critical acclaim, too. An Indian friend who visits home with some frquency really likes the Amrut Fusion Single Malt. And, as you mentioned, there are so many other Indian-made whiskeys now but he says the best ones are, for the most part, Scotch-like. I'm guessing some of these are not exported at all and might be fun to try, or worth toting back.

If you're in Goa, he tells me that Feni, a tequila-like spirit that is made from both cashew and coconut (2 different varieties), is an interesting and fun one. I'm not sure if it's available in other regions but guessing even if it is, it's best to get it in Goa.

He also tells me there is a Cynar-like liqueur called Royal Mawalin, made with dates, spices and herbs, that you can get in Rajasthan. It's typically drunk with soda. He says he's had this in Jaipur and nowhere else.

Lastly, he says that if you're in Dehli, you should eat at Bukhara and India Accent. :D

I asked an Indian friend who lives
(not far from the slums seen in Slumdog Millionaire- in a gated community-where he sips his Single Malt)
about his opinions concerning Indian produced spirits- &
    here is Gopal Uncles reply.....

"Amrut Whiskey is made in Bangalore and almost all exported - cannot find any stocks outside Bangalore. The whiskey itself ( single malt) is not a patch on Glenfiddich or Glenmorangie ( & is overpriced according to me).
"Feni" is available all over India but is made in Goa - either from fermented cashew fruit or coconut! It is NOT as smooth as Tequila and also has a very strong flavour (will make your pee & sweat smell of it for a day!). It's cheap & a very Goan drink!
There you have the experts opinion."
There you have a S. Asian perspective- too!

Did not see any of the above recommended whiskeys. In Chandigarth, saw one called "69" -no kidding- and almost got it for the yuks-yuks. It was pretty cheap so I assumed it was probably crap. I asked the liquor dude and he had no opinion as he had never tasted it. He recommended only the imported scotch whiskeys. The shop was nearly open air as there was no air conditioning and only the two coolers kept beer and wine chilled. I questioned the quality of any 'top shelf' whiskey as it most likely had been there a while and not under optimal conditions We were mostly in Kashmir, which is primarily Muslim and tourist. There were only three places you could buy alcohol-all located on hotel properties. T For two days the place was dry-the day before and day of India's Independence Day so all places did not sell beer. One liquor shop was quite unique -yoou had to order you libations through a tiny slit in the wall while battling with others vying for the attention of the seller-all in 98 degree weather. Alas we left with no whiskey. Perhaps another trip... Thank you for the recs.
