Mateus

At a weekend foray to Sam's Wine in Downers Grove for Cachaca and rose de Provence, the selection of which we were pleased with the former, but disappointed with the latter, we, being of a certain age, went searching for Lancers and Mateus. Lancers was available, but not in the old ceramic type bottle. The spot-on help were unaware of Mateus, but offered to show us the Blue Nun. I forgot to ask about Black Tower, my bad.
Another knowing and knowledgeable staffer did a computer search and found no Mateus in Illinois.
Is that really possible?

But the bigger question is, why?

In case you're interested, the convenience store across the street from me has just started to carry Mad Dog 20/20.

Not the same thing, I know, but it's a slippery slope.

I do think it's a pity that memories of Mateus, and the white zinfindel craze of the '80s, have today made roses so unfashionable. They can be lovely wines, especially in summer.

They are coming back, it seems. We used to get funny looks at Ravinia with our pink French and Spanish wines, but now we see others drinking them. Perhaps because there are some California wineries making decent roses now?

I think there are many excellent roses out there - the wines of Tavel particularly come to mind. Mateus doesn't come to mind.

I hope rose's don't get too popular. I'm real comfortable with 5 and 7 dollar bottles of Rioja, Rhone, and Paso Robles thirst quenchers.

A recent trip to the faux-Riviera cafe Socca in Lakeview makes me think that dry, pink and fruity hasn't caught on, at least in East Lakeview. I was expecting at least a few labels of rose from a place with a Cote d'Azure theme, yet they had only one bottle, not on the menu. While French, it was not from the South. But it was good for my purposes -- cheap and forgettable. The food was half of that equation.
