I am pleased to nominate Bad Wolf Coffee for a 2014 GNR. Since it opened its doors in Roscoe Village, Jonathan Ory has served a bounty of fresh, delicious and coffee-complementing pastries daily with Counter Culture coffee/espresso drinks. Judging by how quickly the pastries disappeared at the summer LTH picnic, I’m sure the board would agree. His canele is a particularly awesome treat that exhibits his skill and attention to creating the perfect pastry.

mbh says: I went by for an iced coffee and the kouign amann and all I can say is wow.
GWiv says: Bad Wolf Coffee Caneles, a whole new level of delicious decadence
boudreaulicious says: Love the quiche. Love the Kouign Amman. Love the coffee. Love the passion.
buttercream says: i went running for 10 miles, and then came back for the kouign-amann.
Jeff B says: This place should have a line out the door always.

I wholeheartedly support this nomination and really want a kouign amann right now. Or maybe a cannele. Oooh..or those Paris-Brest pastries. Or the yummy scones!

I rarely post here but logged in specifically to support this nomination. Nothing but love for Jonathan and his shop. The move to caneles everyday puts this place way over the top.

I was wondering what took so long. This is a classic GNR! And yes its carbo loaded.

I'd love to support the nomination but I've been there three times and they have been sold out of of everything each time. Once they had a couple plain looking rolls but nothing like the pastries others have commented on. Make enough to last past 1pm and maybe I'll be able to partake.

I had the kouign amman on an empty stomach and my heart nearly pounded out of my chest from the sugar dose. It was worth it - spectacular. I have to agree with Octarine about the scarcity of pastries at times. One caveat, and not to do with the food - I wish there was somewhere to sit (or even lean) and have my pastry and tea in peace. Sometimes the communal table at standing height isn't very conducive to quietly contemplating one's dessert.
"To get long" meant to make do, to make well of whatever we had; it was about having a long view, which was endurance, and a long heart, which was hope.

I love the idiosyncratic vibe of the place, up to and including the lottery that is the pastry selection and the chairless, no wi fi setting--it suits Jonathan's personality and, for me, that's part and parcel of what Bad Wolf is. There are so many soulless, generic, comfortable, suitable coffee shops from which to choose, I'd actually hate to see Bad Wolf change a thing to be more like that. Not that I disagree that it's nice to sit and enjoy-- I just love that Bad Wolf is something different.

    HUGE thumbs up for GNR!!!

I understand that Jonathan wants to talk to you and wants you to talk to other people and that's part of the deal. I enjoy it just as much as standing in Intelligentsia waiting for a pour-over among a crowd of comfortable distant hipsters each in their imaginary plastic bubbles described by smart phones, Beats, beards and glasses.

I don't see how not being able to get there in the morning for pastries is a legitimate non-personal gripe. It's a great community, dare I say "neighborhood", coffee shop that serves awesome pastries in the morning. If it's not in your neighborhood or the hours aren't convenient for you, then that's unfortunate to be sure. But it isn't a mark against the character of the establishment.

Pretty sure I didn't say anything negative about the products. The fact that I drove there three times should tell you that the reviews are compelling.

While not exactly locally to me (although not that far away, either), I pop in most Saturdays as my oldest has an activity in the area on Saturday mornings. Pains me to see most of the other parents heading to Starbucks. Great hospitality, great coffee, great pastry, GNR.

    Hi guys!
Thanks for the nomination and support from all of you!
All gripes seem to boil down to misunderstanding the concept/people coming too late in the day to get pastries. I appreciate all the positives! I'm a big fan of you guys too. Thanks again!

I too completely support this nomination. Bad Wolf's pastries are not merely good; they take their concepts to a whole new level, with koiugn amanns, caneles, and paris brests that are far superior to those found elsewhere.

Great place w/a lot of heart. Besides the obvious quality of the products, I love that they closed for the birth of his child.

What's left to say? It's a unique coffee shop in so many ways. Johnathan's vision of a coffee shop where people stand around and chat rather than sit at tables and type has worked out as well as anyone could have hoped. And coffee has never tasted better than when served with one of Johnathan's best-in-class pastries. His kouign-amanns and cannales have raised the bar for everyone and his commitment to excellence stretches to every baked good he attempts. I just wish he'd bring back some of the early favorites like the salammbos and the walnut rolls. It's not nice to get us hooked then take them away!

Last time I stopped into Bad Wolf to pick up some treats for home, two other customers were enjoying their coffee at the counter while conversing with Chef Jonathan. I was encouraged to join them, but unfortunately didn't have the time. I've had the kouign amann a few times and an olive oil/orange zest (I think) loaf from Bad Wolf. High quality, delicious pastries, welcoming environment. It's completely worth taking the longer route to wherever I'm going to stop by Bad Wolf. Yes to GNR!

I'm a big fan of Bad Wolf. Excellent pastries that are a unique contribution to the food scene here. Plus, Jonathan didn't just buy the machine, but actually knows how to make great espresso. Bad Wolf is one of the only pastry joints I'd actually go out of my way for. Definitely a GNR.
