Doddington cheese - there must be some place I can find some in Chicago.

Oddly enough, the only place I've been able to buy it (and where I was first introduced to it) was a tiny gourmet food store in my dinky hometown in upstate New York.

I've made a few (admittedly weak) attempts around town to find it (Fox & Obel, Whole Foods) and they haven't even heard of it.

I'm hoping someone on this board has a)heard of it; b)eaten it (and can attest to its wonderful qualities); and c) can tell me where I can buy it in Chicago.

    Many thanks!

    Hi,

I know nothing of the cheese you refer to, so I only offer avenues to look further. Another thought, as lovely as the name may be, there is a chance it is exclusive to one vendor and you may be passing similar cheeses up only looking for the name. I would suggest trying to describe the experience to an owner or senior staff member of a cheese shop, maybe via tastings they can narrow your search or find its' better sibling!

ON Lincoln Square area on Western across from Spoon Thai is a shop featuring exclusively cheese which you can inquire:

    Cheese Stands Alone
    4547 North Western Avenue
    Chicago, IL 60625
    773-293-3870

If you walk in asking for a 6-year-old Gouda, he will know you are likely one of these cyber food critics! I know, I did this and then he corrected me it is 4-year-old Gouda, then identified me as a person now known as a Chowist.

Some of the large liquor shops like Binny's have cheese sections where you can inquire also. There are two cheese shops in the NW suburbs at least you can contact in this topic:

    Did you try google?

You might find this page, Great American Cheese Collection's where to buy page, useful for finding cheese shops. This page belongs to a wholesaler, who specializes in artisinal American cheese. The shop mentioned above, The Cheese Stands Alone, is right at the top of the list.

Obviously, that won't help with Doddington's, who are, one guesses from the name, British. But a shop that carries unusual American cheese is probably good for unusual Foreign cheese, too.

I'll also check the British cheese case at Jungle Jim's when I'm in Cincinatti in a couple of weeks. Last time I was there, they had a fairly good selection of specifically British cheese. But I didn't pay attention in enough detail to remember a name like Doddington's, when they all have names like that!

You could always email them directly and ask if its available here. Since there website, however, proclaims: "Cheese from Doddington Dairy is served at a range of quality food shops, hotels and restaurants from Edinburgh to County Durham, as well as some further afield," my guess is that their North American distribution is limited.

Now, there is a food shopping destination! I was there just over a year ago, which generated a Jungle Jim's post.

I stayed in a motel overnight just to visit the place, I had been at a conference in Cincinnati. I was very favorably impressed by the place, though it certainly isn't very local cheese shopping!
