Any recommendations for fresh baked bread in the Libertyville area? I’ve tried Jewel, Marianos, and Panera. Sometimes it’s good, other times it’s only ok. Mostly I choose based on convenience.

I haven’t tried Whole Foods or Sunset yet.

Did you try Aldi on Milwaukee Ave? They have an in-store bakery.

Milwaukee Avenue between Townline Road (Rt 60) and 176 is quite an efficient stretch for food shopping: Whole Foods, Trader Joe's, Mariano's, Aldi and Jewel.

I’ve never tried Aldi’s. Given my impression of them, I just assumed it was more a budget conscious store.

What do you (or anyone) think of Lamb’s Farm? I heard they have a bakery.

I really liked Lovin Oven, but since they closed I’m lost.

I've never been to the bakery in person. However, I recently received a holiday gift box from Lambs. The shortbread cookies were outstanding. I had to hide them from my wife.

    Hi,

Aldi is not the 'AlDiscount store' it once was. They are making many incremental changes, upgrading their stores, offering organic products and still have products available one week and gone the next dynamic.

You are fortunate to have one of the rare Aldi's with an instore bakery. I have not bought their breads, but I have bought their baguettes, croissants, cheese twists, pretzels, donuts and apple fritters.

At the very least, you may want to visit to acquaint yourself. It may or may not be you cup of tea.

I checked out Aldi’s. It didn’t look much different than what I remembered. I wouldn’t call what’s there an in-house bakery. They told me the bread comes in frozen and they just heat it up (their words).

Trader Joe’s doesn’t have an on premise bakery.

Lambs Farm has a bakery, but they don’t do bread.

Jewel and Mariano’s also get frozen bread. Guess I’ll check out Whole Foods.

Otherwise I’ll have to drive to Antioch and go to LovinOven. They make their breads from scratch.

I’m fairly certain that Karina’s in Mundelein bakes their own bread.

Here are three places with great, in-house-baked breads (although you'll find a better selection at all three in the morning than later in the day):

    1. Gerhard's in Lake Forest
    2. Gourmet Frog, the bakery outlet of Froggy's restaurant, in Highwood
    3. Three Tarts Bakery in Northfield

All three also have excellent pastry as well.

yes 3 tarts is very good but its 20 miles from Libertyville. if you're willing to drive that far, there are probably plenty of better options.

Which is why I listed it third, after Gerhard's (7 miles) and Gourmet Frog (12 miles).

There are two, which I listed. I'm not aware of any others, but those who are, are welcome to list more, instead of criticizing a helpful, constructive post.

you might want to try foodstuffs, which has at least 2 locations (lake forest and glencoe) that are closer to Lville than Nfield. They have some very nice breads. And Sunset Foods (several locations nearer to Lville) has some nice white breads, though nothing artisanal or hearthy.

I checked out Karina’s. They had rolls and buns, but not bread. They did say I could order bread with one day notice, but only white and whole wheat. Oh, I was told that they make it from scratch, no frozen bread. So it’s too bad they don’t do bread.

Thanks for the Highwood recommendations, but they’re not that close. As I said I like Lovin Oven. Think I’ll stick with them.

I just looked up Lovin Oven because I was thinking of checking it out. It was reported as closed on websites like Google, Yelp, and Tripadvisor.

    Shorty,

I just looked for the Antioch location. It is closed, though for the night. You may want to try in the morning during their hours of operation.
