NY Times, Reichl, etc.

Even though I am one of the more New Yorkophobic sorts here (I don't know where to get real NY pizza in Chicago and I don't care!), I will now give a lotta link love to the greatest city in central new England. Two interesting New York Times articles:

And then, how disappointing that Ruth Reichl, who's fun to read, should turn out to be rather dull and irritating to listen to (in an Elaine May kinda way). Nevertheless, interesting:

It certainly doesn't compare with this, which must be Terry Gross's greatest interview ever.

Having eaten at both Pam real Thai and Spoon Thai a number of times, I can assure you that Chicago's king of Thai is far superior to New York's.

No matter how desperately Noo Yawkahs want to be part of New England, it will never, ever happen. As it is, Connecticut is in danger of disqualifying itself as well.

As for Reichl, I'll just say I Don't Get It.

I haven't tried Spoon Thai yet, but I lived less than a block from Pam's from before it opened right up through the end of September, and I must have had at least 100 meals there (most of them delivered). There were a few flashes of greatness, like the occasional perfect nam sod, but it wasn't even the best Thai restaurant in the neighborhood. That title went to Wondee Siam, a few blocks north. Wondee was always solid, and for about a year, downright brilliant (before a particular chef left.) I really don't understand the praise heaped on Pam's. It's better than average Thai, but not incredibly special.

I concur, Stinky. I found Pam to be quite disappointing as was the large majority of Thai that I ate in New York. Wondee could be fabulous in its day. But, that day seems to have passed.
