Has anyone taken cooking classes at The Wooden Spoon in Andersonville? Their store is nice and their class offerings look interesting, but before I sign up I'd love to hear about people's experiences there. Good? Bad? And, if you happen to have a basis for comparison: How does it compare to other classes such as those at The Chopping Block? Thanks for any insight.

I took a Vietnamese cooking class at The Wooden Spoon from a woman who was very knowledgeable and had spent a lot of time in Vietnam. I wish I had taken the longer class where they walk over to the markets on Argyle St. and she shows you what to look for in the markets. I really enjoyed my class but I'll bet it depends heavily on what instructor you get. Unfortunately I do not remember the name of of young woman who taught my class, but I did get a lot out of it.

    Rich,

I see Rebecca Wheeler, who I think may own WS, is leading the shopping trip on September 12. See details http://www.woodenspoonchicago.com/classes.htm#September%20classes...

However, I would suggest grabbing a copy of Lonely Planet's World Food Guide for Vietnam. After reading this short guide, walking through an Asian market was a whole new experience.

FYI, I always thought WS was a bit on the pricey side for some of their fairly standard classes....if someone has experience that says it is worth every penny, please advise.

FYI2, I have had good luck with the Francis Parker School classes (more than just the food ones, also) and to a lesser extent with Latin School....these evening courses help fund scholarships.

Thanks for the info. It's good to get some thoughts on these classes before registering.
