I recently saw a television show featuring a seafood stew recipe that included Buddha's Hand as a seasoning ingredient. Does anyone know where this unusual citrus may be found in the Chicago area?

Like other citrus, this variety of citron is a winter fruit. I would check Asian stores starting in November. It's reportedly a prized gift at Chinese New Year.

However, I'd think you could substitute the rind of another variety of Citrus medica, and there ought to be some available in Jewish neighborhoods in late September, because it's an essential part of the festival of Sukkot. Look for bumpy fruits labeled etrog.

I've also seen it in Mexican Produce markets.
