I'm wondering if anyone can help me find either of these 2 things in Chicago.

    1. While in Tokyo I had these amazing grilled rice balls with Miso soup. They were like regular rice balls but unstuffed and they were grilled until the outside was brown. (Kind of like when you leave rice on the stove too long mmmmm, yummy).

    2. At an Indian restaurant in L.A., and I'm sure on the streets of India, there are these little sandwiches that are called (bear with me here, I'm doing this phonetically) wa-da-pows or something to that effect-I just call them Indian sliders. They are little buns that have been grilled and in between is a potato cutlet with a super hot chutney.

    Any info is appreciated!
    Thanks

I've searched everywhere in chicago for the grilled rice balls but I haven't found anything yet. I have the recipe for it from a Japanese Bento Box cookbook I recently purchased. I'll post it later if you'd like to know how to make them on your own.

you may be able to find them at mitsuwa. i seem to remember hearing them selling onigiri in the past. Of course, even if they do sell them, they may still all be filled.

And I've been wrong about mitsuwa's offerings in the past, too. So don't trust me. But give it a shot anyway.

Saraskim-I would love it if you would post the recipe for the rice balls!

After I came home from my trip I craved them so badly that I tried to make them at home with no recipe and no idea of what I was doing. Needless to say it did not go well :(

this recipe and the picture come from naomi kijima's book

    Roasted Rice Balls

14 oz (400 mg) hot cooked rice
    2 tsp miso
    1 tsp sake
    2 tsp soy sauce

    1. form rice balls into four balls. combine the miso with 1/2 tsp of sake and set aside. combine the soy sauce with the remaining sake and set aside.
    2. grill or broil the rice ballls on both sides
    3. brush two of the rice balls with the miso mixture and brush the other two with the soy sauce mixture. continue grilling or broiling until well browned.

another thing is don't try the frozen onigiri that is sold at mitsuwa. it's overpriced and the rice balls which appear roasted are actually glazed with soy sauce.

Those are usually spelled vada pav or vada pau (though phonetically you're on the nose), a number of devon chaat places serve them, you're more likely to get them at the indian spots west of western than the pakistani places (they are a bombay street thing), It is not something I normally order here so I can't give a recommendation for one spot over another, sorry
