My siblings and I are currently in the emotional up-and-down of clearing our parents' house. We came across a mystery utensil - can't remotely guess its function. It's the item at the bottom of the photo, directly below the tongs. The handle is about 8 inches long, the circular end is about 3 inches across and about 1/2 inch thick. If I had to guess, I'd say it's cast aluminum but it's got quite a bit of heft. Maybe for flattening something as it fries? If anyone knows what it is, I would much appreciate learning!

    Pounding meat?

    It appears I am right: https://chefstoys.com/93/norpro-6211-me ... pounder-93

    I'm sorry for your loss.

When I my Oma died in the mid-1970s, I took most of her kitchen home. Just about every day, I grab something she once did. It has always been very meaningful to me.

Cathy, thanks for the fast reply - I don't see how the mysterious item could be anything other than that meat pounder. Thanks also for your kind sympathies. It's much appreciated.

I'm curious about the purpose of the top utensil in the picture.

I still use the sharpening steel from my Grandfather's butcher shop. It's a little over 20 inches long with the handle being about 6 inches of it.

Katie, the item at the top is another puzzler! It has kind of a scissors action and it looks like it cuts or pushes out through those slots. It will be a few days before I am back at the house - I'll see if I can get a better pic next time I am there.

    Hi,

THe item on top may be an ice crusher.
