Does anyone know where I can get the best price on capsicum/ ref chili powder or paprika? Best I've found is about $3/lb at Butera a Market in Harwood Heights, which is a bit pricey for the amount I go through. HMart, Joong Boo, and Restaurant Depot are all too expensive.

I add it into my chicken feed and it makes the yolks a really incredible red color that my clients love and adds an unusual rich taste to the eggs.
    Any resources appreciated.

    Hi,

I was reading about what affects yolk color.

Foods That Naturally Influence Egg Yolk Color
    Yolk Color: Ingredient
    nearly colorless: white cornmeal
    pale yolks: wheat, barley
medium yellow yolks: yellow cornmeal, alfalfa meal
deep yellow yolks: marigold petals, kale, greens
orange to red yolks: carrots, tomatoes, red peppers

Have you tried switching them to carrots? Same effect (though to what extent) and less costly ingredient.

There is a custom blending spice company in Waukegan. I saw online bulk sales of 25- and 50-pound bag of chiles.

You could grow, dry and grind your own chili powder, too.

Hi- I posted this question on a Facebook deals group I am involved in, and somebody just posted that Valli produce has large containers for cheap too, although I suspect Cathy's suggestion is going to be cheaper. Hope this helps, Nancy

Have you tried Fresh Farms and Patel Brothers? I don't think they have bulk bins but they do offer spices in large containers.

Restaurant Depot, and other shops closed off the consumers, is presently open to the public. They do not seem have an online catalog, though instacart seems to have created one. I saw they had five pound containers at instacart price around $35.

I did see bulk sales prices for 25 and 50 pound bags. What you need to identify is where Mexican food processors make bulk purchases. Just do a search for <bulk chili powder> to see. Any savings can go down the drain with S&H.

Looking at wholesale prices, the best deal that I could find is $229 for a 50# sack at My Spice Sage or $2.10/lb at Bulk Apothecary for 100+ lbs.

    25# for $59.99

Somewhere in the Chicago area has to be bulk chili.

I do give them carrots on occasion, but they aren't really fond of them (I have the world's first picky chickens). I really like the taste that the capsicum gives.

Great ideas, guys. Thanks so much. It's been a long time since I've been active on LTH, but as soon as I got to thinking about resources, I knew you guys would be the ones to ask.

Somebody on the Facebook page I post on suggested Chefs Warehouse which is on the far South side of Chicago. They have five pound jugs of it.

Note also that birds are unaffected by capsaicin.

I was going to recommend my favorite chile powder from Chimayo, NM, sun dried, incredible flavor... but it's too good for the birds.
