First visit to Hawaii

We're leaving for Hawaii on the 15th. We'll have, I figure, six meals on Oahu, six in Kauai, and a dozen or so in Maui. I've been pulling stuff off the Chowhound board, but would love, of course, the opinions of LTH'ers I know and trust. We're staying anywhere-but-Waikiki in Oahu (not yet reserved), in a B & B in Kapaa in Kauai, and at a time share (the result of a charity auction bid which I was not intending to win) on the west coast of Maui. We'll have a car throughout.

I am not looking for anything fancy. If I want to spend gobolas of money on fancy food, I can do so here--and 99% of the time I don't want to spend the money here either. But I would love to try Asian foods I can't get here, or fresh fish that wouldn't be so fresh here, or anything unique to Hawaii or just, what's the word?, delicious!.

Happy to have non-food recommendations as well.

One of the nicest meals I had on Maui was at Mamas Fish House. Immaculately fresh local fish in a lovely settting. Check out their websiteand make reservations in advance.

In Maui, try the Hula Grill in Whaler's Village. Great fish (aren't all the restaurants out there "great fish" places?), better overall experience than the more-hyped places in Lahaina town. Also, for cheap eats, try Maui Taco. Now, to my dismay, I recently found a Maui Taco outlet at Reagan National Airport. But, I can vouch that the authentic Maui locations are very, very good. I tended toward fish tacos when I was there (sensing a theme?), but everything else tried was good also.

I second the nomination for Mama's Fish House.

My favorite place on Maui is Pacific'O in Lahaina. Don't miss the tempura maki. The restaurant is right on the beach and sunsets are spectacular. It's a bit pricey, but the food is great.

There's also a good cheap plate lunch place on the north end of Lahaina called Aloha Mixed Plate. Leilani's and Hula Grill on Ka'anapali beach both have solid seafood.

Kula Lodge on the way to Haleakala is expensive for dinner, but much more reasonable for breakfast and lunch. Food is okay, views are spectacular.

The Paia Fish Market has relatively cheap and fresh seafood.

On Kauai, we had less luck, but we had a good meal at Duke's Canoe Club in Lihue. We had some really good shave ice with mac nut ice cream on the drive up to Hanalei, but I'm blanking on the name. I'll post if I come up with it in time.

Gorge on local seafood that is hard to find elsewhere, like opah, ono & opakapaka. It's wonderful stuff. Have a great time!
