Will have 48 hours in Shanghai in Feb 2005, very much looking forward to the "real" stuff.

    Any suggestions? (not just food)
I did absolutely nothing and it was everything I thought it could be.

I was there in January 04. The best guide books for us were Time Out. Other than that, we just used a lot of maps, and went where things looked good, because Shanghai is an amazing place to walk around. Each area will lead to a new thing to explore. The Bund is more expensive in terms of eating, but still not bad at all compared to most major cities. I have to say my favorite restaurant was called the "Purple Grape" and it's in the European-architecture area. I wish I had more specifics for you as to where it was. I'm sure your concierge would be able to tell you. I still daydream about their eggplant with garlic sauce. 3 of us ate 4 dishes and had beer and I think it was about 10 bucks!

I was there last year, and I had this Chinese guide book on food.. =) There is a steamed bun place (a shack really) with the best buns I have ever had. Gingery pork filling, juicy... I will dig through my stuff and try and find the address...
