A colleague of mine is going to visit her daughter out that-a-way, and was wondering if there is any good indigenous fare to be had. Any help is appreciated.

I've not been to Lynchburg, but have spent a lot of time in Charlottesville, known as the dining capitol of Central Virginia, about an hour away. I can recommend the following spots in C-Ville: Continental Divide on Main Street near the downtown mall for very good Tex-Mex; C&O restaurant on the downtown mall for upscale American comfort food; Metropolitain on Water Street near the downtown mall for American-French fusion in an upscale atmosphere; Bodo's Bagels (multiple locations) for great bagels and turkey sandwiches; Chap's on the downtown mall for fabulous banana and black raspberry ice cream as well as great malts. The Water Street Brewing Company (I think I'm remembering the name correctly) makes good beer and has pretty good upscale bar food.

Crozet Pizza 10 miles outside Charlottesville on Route 250 has very good New Havenish pizza. You need to make a reservation.

The Blue Ridge Pig, in Nellysford Virginia in Nelson County is a must-visit. They make outstanding barbecue in an old stone shack in the middle of the rolling hills and mountains of Central Virginia. The potato salad is great, too.

    Hope this helps!

A little bit of a trip from Lynchburg is what I consider the best restaurant in the U.S.: Inn at Little Washington. If it's worth the hour and a half trip from D.C., it is most certainly worth the trip from Lynchburg.

FYI, for all you cook book junkies out there, the chef/proprietor's, Patrick O'Connell, new book just hit the stands and it is fantastic. My husband, who never looks at my cookbooks drooled over almost every page. I've already picked out our 8 course New Year's dinner to be prepared exclusively from recipes in this book.
