Edit: Thanks to Giovanna, it came to my attention that Halloween is on a Tuesday - a night when Burt's is closed. We will meet for an All Saint's Day dinner at Burt's on November 1st at 7 PM. The costume theme: Come as your favorite saint.

Anyone up for a Halloween (Wednesday, 10/31, 7 PM) excursion to Burt's Place for pan pizza? I alerted Burt and Sharon, and they are on board. How about it, folks?

I'm in for 1 as well, but I'd like to suggest a somewhat later time of day, as I may be out trick-or-treating with my daughter.

If a later starting time turns out to not easily be do-able, I'll just try to join the group as soon as I can.

I'm glad there is some interest. As far as beginning later, I'm OK with that, and maybe people would like to weigh in on the possibility of an 8PM start time. But I should call Burt as well, because it is my impression they tend to close early on weeknights in general. We would not want to eat and run in that case.

Also, let me add that Burt encourages all his partrons (not just GWiv) to bring their favorite toppings if he does not have them on the menu. For instance, he no longer carries anchovies, due to little demand :?: :!: but will happily add them to the pan pizza if someone brings them.

I'm going to check with Burt about the possibility of bringing in dessert. In my view, it is just plain wrong to let the holiday pass without chocolate.

    Hi,

I'd prefer 7 PM. If there will be enough people involved and given the limitations of Burt's oven, then pizza will be served in waves as they are finished. Anyone coming later will still have fresh pizza available to them as it comes from the oven.

    Hello. An observation:

My calendar says October 31, 2006 is a Tuesday.

As this conflicts with my square dancing class :!: , I will not be joining you if it's a Tuesday. I might be able to if it's a Wednesday [pending my ever varying work schedule].

    HI,

Very observant Giovanna. I believe Burt's is closed Tuesday. So instead we can have All Saints Day pizza blow out. Everyone can come dressed as their favorite Saint.

Burt and I thought Halloween was a Wednesday-- looks like we will arrange All Saint's Day instead, as Cathy suggested. Raised as a Protestant with Buddhist leanings, I need help selecting my favorite Saint, though. Who do you suppose is the patron saint of pizza? Saint Elizabeth of Hungary (saint of pastry chefs) clearly will not do. We must have an Italian saint, don't you think? Any Vatican connections out there in LTH-land?

If the event is on a Wednesday evening instead of Tuesday, I'll have to regretfully withdraw, as I have a conflicting family commitment.

I did a quick search that turned up a 12th century Italian saint named Cono, a Benedictine monk from Teggiano in southern Italy, who is supposed to have successfully toured the interior of an oven without his crust being fatally carmelized. San Cono Pizzeriais named after him.

I'd like to suggest St. Nicholas of Myra.

He shows up at http://www.catholic-forum.com/SAINTS/patron00.htm as both a patron of bakers AND a patron of Naples.

Working against him is the fact that he already has a holiday thing going for him: http://www.catholic-forum.com/SAINTS/saintn01.htm

On the other other hand, it would make finding a costume a snap!

How good/bad is the traffic near there at that time of night? Is it best to travel on 94 or just drive on Lincoln Ave. ?

    HI,

From Budlong Woods, you will likely enter the expressway at Foster. Dempster isn't too far north. If you hear traffic reports of an accident or a jam, then taking Lincoln AVenue is not a bad alternative.

A traffic-free route to Burt's was discovered by a friend of mine who rides a motorcycle. Take N. Lehigh Ave. north along the west side of the Soo Line tracks. It goes through a mostly industrial area that is eerily scenic and deserted at night. N. Lehigh begins at Devon 1 block west of North Central in Edgebrook.

That's how I go. There is almost never any traffic, but portions of Lehigh are under construction right now, so YMMV.

I went to Burt's last night to firm up the date. We are on for the 1st at 7PM, with apologies to mhl, who has a previous commitment.

Burt says we can let him know just a day or two before what our final numbers will be. Told that we would be there on All Saint's Day, Burt anticipated the favorite saint costume theme. Either that or he is now reading this forum. . .

Here is our current list. PM me if I have made a mistake!

    Cathy2 - 1
    nr706 - 1
    Giovanna -1
    magpie 1140 - 1 tentative
    GWiv - 2
    fastfoodsnob - 1
    dees_1 - 1
    Josephine - 1
    Bruce - 1 tentative
    Snark - 1
    Nelson - 1 - tentative
    GAF - 1
    chapulin - 2

I would encourage anyone who is waffling due to time constraints -- 7 is too early with work schedules for some -- to straggle in. Pizza seems the kind of meal that is not bound by rigid rules.

Burt suggested that I pre-order a few pies, since they take a while to cook (and IIRC there are limits to the oven space). The thought is to have a sausage pizza, a vegetarian pizza, and perhaps a third pizza on order for when we arrive. Though perhaps people would like to start with some of the big salads or some appetizers, which I have not tried? (I can, however, vouch for the quality of the onion rings and burgers.)
I would welcome input from those who will be attending. Oh, and Burt is fine with us bringing in dessert-- what would be saintly, or do saints all follow an aescetic regime?
