It's too late for me to go thru a description of the unfortunate end of Thursday's Periyali outing, plus it occurs to me that maybe I should have asked Bob's permission to post this. Oh well. Bob certainly appears to be an even-tempered sort, so I'll hope he doesn't mind. I write with the assumption that people are concerned and would like to know how he is.

Bob fell outside of Periyali after the dinner. Since I had given him a lift there and live reasonably near by, I followed his ambulance to Lutheran General Hospital where he is, as they say, resting comfortably. His arm is broken badly enough to require surgery to fix it. It appeared when I left that they'll be keeping him overnight, and want to do surgery as soon as is possible. An orthopedist hadn't seen Bob yet when I left, so there are no more details available. I was hoping it wasn't such a bad break and they could just cast it and I could take Bob home, but no such luck.

Yes. Sounds awful. Does Bob have his handy cell-phone browser with him so he can keep in touch with LTH?

All the best to Bob, if he or his near and dear ones are browsing. Very sorry to hear this. Feel better soon.

I called the hospital earlier this afternoon and they told me that he was in recovery after surgery :!: . He didn't have a room assigned yet. I'll try back later and report.

    Mr. Z,

Would you be willing to spearhead a flower (Apple Fritter?) drive? If so, count me in for a share.

Ellen and I will think good thoughts for Bob.

    Enjoy,

I visited with Bob in the hospital this afternoon, as part of a process culminating in the feeding of Kitty [his faithful feline companion]. His arm surgery went well, and he hopes to go home tomorrow. He is comfortable with me posting about his condition, but I'll leave the details to him.

[Imagine Jon-Stewart-type grimace here.] Funny story. As we're sitting in the emergency cubicle waiting for word of what's going to happen, Bob asked for a glass of water. The nurse refused, saying that she thought it likely they'd be doing surgery, and he shouldn't ingest anything. Thought to myself, "if she only had some idea of the size of the dinner we just had...."

I just talked to Bob. He's in fine spirits and doing well after surgery. He ended up breaking his wrist in 5 places...man, that's some strong basil! He wasn't sure, but he thought he would probably be going home tomorrow. Sunday at the latest barring something unforseen. I think Gary's idea of Apple Fritters from Old Fashioned Bakery sounds good. I'll go Monday and get a few. I casually mentioned Apple Fritters to Bob and it seemed to strike a quite responsive chord. I guess when he gets home and reads this, the surprise factor will be gone. Hi Bob. Anyone who wants to pitch in can send me a P.M. and we'll settle up later. If enough people want to pitch in, maybe we can get hime something else chowish besides just Fritters.

Been away from the board since being one of the first ones to leave Thursday -- what a downer. Add our best wishes to Bob as well.

Many many thanks to all of you for notes, calls, emails, etc. All things considered, I can't remember tasting even dried basil in anything I had, let alone fresh, and this is what baffles me most about what that planter was doing there.

I returned to work today and am doing fine -- the surgery was apparently simple, but the recovery complex, but as reported, they let me loose Saturday. A delightful coincidence is that the doctor who heads Lutheran's surgery department is the wife of a coworker, so she stopped by to cheer me up as well. (I was in recovery so long only because they had to wait for regular beds to empty, though I suspect this connection might've facilitated the semiprivate (and otherwise empty) room with a fine window view.)

And thanks to all, particularly Steve, for the fritters; I'll let him try to describe my expression when I saw them. I got four meals out of them, finishing the second one here late this morning. (Thanks also to Steve for managing to stay in my living room so long when I hadn't showered in who knows how long. He is made of stern stuff.)

And especial thanks to Giovanna for setting a record for going above and beyond the call of duty. For someone who innocently offered to lug around one of the remaining non-driving troglodytes, she ended up having a much longer evening than she expected. But she handled everything wonderfully, worked hard to keep my morale up, and I plan to refuse to trip over all other planters unless she is nearby. It just wouldn't be the same.

Greek cuisine traditionally doesn't use basil very much at all.

    Welcome back, Bob.
