I think we need to mark this momentous occasion, which should happen any time now. [And, in fact, happened at about 8 p.m. on Friday]. I propose a virtual pot-luck at which the moderators are our honored guests and our major-domo gets a golden throne and the first pick of everything (after the slaves have tasted it to be sure it hasn't been poisoned, of course).

Just one catch on this virtual potluck--it has to be something that you can pick up within walking distance of your home. I understand that for VI and some of the other Mil-walk-a-thon survivors, "walking distance" gives them a 12 mile radius, and that's okay too. But for most of us ordinary mortals, it will probably be less. On the other hand, since this is strictly virtual, you don't have to worry about the ice cream melting or the fried chicken getting soggy.

I'll start. From my home in south Oak Park I'm going to bring village gyros and raspberry shakes from Nicky's (formerly Kings and Queens), and a couple loaves of houska from the Oak Park Bakery.

    Next?

Okay, Ann, I'll bring a little dessert: manon cafe pralines from Leonidas.

    Ann,

If walking distance is a requirement I'll bring whatever is cooking on my neighbors' grills.

Thai Fried Chicken, Sticky Rice and Papaya Salad- hot (Thai Avenue, but will walk to Spoon if Judy is working), wouldn't have even know about it before this and other boards.

Well as one of the designated "walkers" on the board (even if I did miss the walkathon) I guess I have to contribute items that show the range that I cover on a regular basis....

    So:

    - Italian Ice from Anthony's on Armitage - Honeydew, Grapefruit, and oen or two other fresh flavors - whatever tastes good when I pick it up

    - Papaya Salad, Moo Ping, Chopped Chicken with Basil and Preserved Eggs from TAC Quick.

    - Fresh Michigan seedless grapes from the Green City Market (amazingly good, somewhat concord grape like, but without the seeds and easier texturally to snack on) my current snack addiction

    - Sausage from Pastoral on Broadway - they have a range of sausages they get from a sauage maker in New York. Okay, more than slightly pretentious, but also very, very good. Their cheese selection is not bad, but personally I was slightly disappointed in the aged guada I just bought from there.

    - A bottle or two of cheap wine from Trader Joes - the bottles that I love being some Spanish Reds.

okay so a bit of a heavy load (and a busy Wednesday) but virtually doable and fun (and all spots I have recently walked to/from near my home).

There's nothing within walking distance of my house. And I don't think my neighbors eat.

If you like, I can bring some of the Moroccan Sweet Carrot Slaw I made for my office potluck.

Well, I go to La Quebrada carrying various heavy things on my bike all the time, so I would have to bring some Cecina Estilo Guerrero from their 51st and California location. And from Kimbark Liquors, which actually is within walking distance (to everyone in Hyde Park), a couple of 750 ml bottles of Blanche de Chambly beer.

The only thing within walking distance, and these are stretching the definition, are a Walgreen's to the north and Chinalite 2 Go to the south. (Maybe some lake seaweed or a dead gull to the east.) But I'll be happy to order my favorite takeout from my old stomping grounds: the ricotta, sausage, and roasted red pepper pizza at Santoro's on Elm St. in Somerville, the cheese steak from Maria's on Holland St. in Somerville, and a pastrami and swiss, no mustard, from any deli in Coolidge Corner. (I'm headed to Boston on family business next weekend and hope to have at least two of the three.)

Heck, I am a suburbanite, and we do not walk! We drive big old SUV's and are prooud of it  . But perhaps I could bring some noodle soup with barbecued pork from Fabulous Noodles. And maybe a little greek chicken and potatos from Gemato's Open Pit Bbq.
