vPlants: A virtual herbarium of the Chicago Region (www.vplants.org) is a collaboration between The Field Museum, The Morton Arboretum and the Chicago Botanic Garden. The vPlants web site offers free public access to herbarium specimens of the greater Chicago Region (24 counties of 4 states)m with collection data and high-resolution images of specimens. Currently, we are adding detailed description pages for the species and varieties of plants and fungi.
The "Online Idenfication Guides" pilot project will produce a set of web pages focused on major fungal groups. The guides start with morphological groupings that lead to the levels of family, genus and species. These guide pages will allow basic identification to the family and genus levels and will educate users in the process.
