We propose that the Evanston Thursday lunch be held at Deta's Cafe, 7555 N. Ridge (in Chicago, 2 doors south of the border), at noon. Who would be interested in joining us?

Of course I'm there. Can't wait to try the burek.

I'm working, so will not be able to attend, but want to compliment your choice of venue. Deta's is a longtime favorite of mine, and I try to stop in at least once a month or so. The burek are great (potato and meat are my favorites) but other food shines as well...don't miss the 'beef with cabbage" if it's available. Deta herself is a sweetheart too. I'm surprised this place hasn't been discussed more on this board as it really is a gem.

We stopped by Deat's at noon to fix a menu for Thursday. Deta was very gracious, letting us sample the various items she had cooked today, including juej (pardon my Montenegran spelling!) and green cabbage with ribs; we also ordered pita/bureks, one with cheese and one with meat, onion, and potatoes (with enough left over for dinner!) as well as chicken soup.
For Thursday, we thought we would order soup (bean with sausage); juej (Mediterranean vegetable stew -- in other words, zuccini, eggplant, green pepper, onion, rice); teletina (?), veal with potatoes; two pitas; and baklava. Hope we can tempt a few more comers! The food is excellent, very reasonable (our lunch for two with leftovers was $28), and Deta is a marvelous hostess. It is like eating at home in Montenegro (I suppose).

I'll be able to make it to Deta's tomorrow. The menu sounds delicious.

Thanks for the heads-up; I'm right around the corner and have been intending to try it for ages...

    Hi,

I will be there around 12:30 ... why not just put a portion of the food on my plate, which I will get to when I arrive!

    Thanks!

A most enjoyable lunch. I particularly liked the meat & onion pie and the Veal.

After such an excellent meal I find it no wonder that Rex Stout made his ficitonal detective-gourmet-orchid fancier Nero Wolfe a Montenegran.

I thoroughly enjoyed myself; it was lovely to meet you all - and I'm going to have to find out where she gets that addictive cheese!
