Hi- There is an article in the New York Times about several studies that were done in areas that were once food deserts, but now have a supermarket in their neighborhood. The studies have found out that just making healthy food available, does not guarantee that people will purchase the healthy food. One of the reasons given for people passing up healthy food, is the fact that they perceive it to be more expensive. Pop is less expensive than milk is. Some people also say that they don't have the time to fix fruits and veggies. Another problem is that people in poorer neighborhoods are used to eating heavily processed food, and actually prefer that to eating fruits and veggies. They mentioned that people that are more educated are more likely to eat healthier. Here is a link to the article.

Hi- Here is an interesting article about food deserts. A food activist of color is interviewed. She hates the word food desert, and instead prefers the word food apartheid. Here is a link to the article.

It is interesting because Karen Washington the food activist of color says that food pantries are supposed to be used short term, and if everybody made a livable wage they could afford to buy their own food.

She mentions that in her neighborhood they have a block party every year, and they don't serve pop anymore. All they offer is water to drink.
