So now someone has designed a robot to slice shawarma/donor kebap. I hesitate to ask what's next...

[But the article did serve to awaken a very happy memory of the finest donor/gyro I've ever had in my life, in a tiny shoppe in the basement of the former East Berlin town hall. Certainly among the Top Ten bites of my life. There is nothing like that particular sammie!]

The robot slicer isn't that much of a stretch. The motorized spit itself is a robot.*

What I found more fascinating is that the shawerma industry has a conference. (Not surprising, just fascinating)

At the fair, representatives of every possible facet of doner kebab- making crowded into two small rooms at a conference centre in central Berlin.

*I can imagine a more advanced version using a "hand" or device to push/pull a pita/wrap under the falling slices. Under that pita, there would be a weighing device. When a threshold is crossed, the pita is pushed, onto another platform which rises and with bending edges, wraps the pita around the meat (squirting bottles of appropriate sauce could be part of this).
All of this is inside a big box and actuated by putting in a token.

no robots involved(that I know of)...my favorite doner kebab: a stand attended by Turkish hoods next to a suspiciously popular men's room around the corner from a brothel/klub in downtown Mainz ca. 1999

Nothing like as colorful as CG's, but my favorite doners came from a literal hole-in-the-wall place across the street from Mamoun's in the Village. Wonder if it's still there, or been swept away by the, ahem, revitalization of New Gent City.

Almost as good as CG's. In '95 I attended a conference that met in the former East Berlin City Council building, by then converted into a conference hotel. (It's now the Chinese Embassy.) In a sort of basement restaurant operation was the recent winner of "Best Doner in Berlin." They made their own pitas, and their own gyro. The doner was simply incredible, with a tangy sauce that still waters my mouth in memory. I went there *five* times during the three conference days.

In general, doner in Deutschland are superior to those in other places. Higher standards I'd guess. Next time you're in Germany, do NOT miss the chance to do a doner or two.
