Everyone's beginning Italian-style coffee machine--the moka--is in danger of extinction on account of its maker declaring bankruptcy. Quelle dommage...

It'd be a shame if Bialletti goes out of business. I just bought one of these coffemakers a couple of months ago on a trip to Rome and Florence. It is fun to be able to make coffee the same way we did in the apartment we rented.

I can't remember what I paid for it. On Amazon, at least, Bialletti doesn't compete well on price, e.g., $29.95 vs knockoffs priced from $11.99 to $18.25. The latter price is for one made in China; I assume the lower-priced ones are too.

Googling around some more, I'm not sure Bialetti mokas are made in Italy anymore. I've seen indications that the factory in Italy closed back in 2010 or so; that some or all models are now made in eastern Europe, India, or China; and that Italian law allows such foreign-made products to still be labelled "Made in Italy." But who know what to believe about what's on the internet.
