We are thinking of going to SF during the winter break. I've found some very good deals via Hotels.com. Anyone know anything about the hotels coming up:

    - Embassy Hotel - In Civic Center area

    - Ramada Plaza - In theater district

    - Powell Hotel - Union Square

    - Executive Hotel/Mark Twain - Union Square

    - BW Cantebury Hotel - Union Square

We want to say where we would not need a car.

    Any help is appreciated.

Have you tried Priceline? There are a lot of pretty good deals available. See Biddingfortravel.com for more information and a listing of winning bids.

One hotel that I liked was the Tuscan Inn down by Fisherman's Wharf. They have a nice restaurant - Cafe Palmidoro that was pretty good.

Couldn't agree more--hie you to biddingfortravel.com. Read the Hotel FAQ, then study the SFO board there back through ten pages or so.

Tonight I've got two rooms at a Toronto Courtyard, total bill for both=$67 inclusive of VAT; hotel web rate $117 PER room PLUS 15% VAT.

Tue night I have two rooms for guests at the Buckhead Grand Hyatt in Atlanta, total both rooms $143; hotel web rate $235 PER room.

Naming your own price is a fool's game, UNLESS there is a place like BFT where everyone not only posts what they paid, but their reviews of possible hotels within a quality level within a zone in a particular city. PM me if you need more info.

Somewhat off-topic, but we've had fantastic success with Hotels.com, and the prices I am looking at for SF are like, less than $300 per person for airfare and a week of hotel in SF.

It's hard to plan a vacation around Priceline, but I especially like them for rental cars if nothing else.

As to hotels, I was thinking of posting something on the SF chowhound board, but I'm a bit leary that it will get laser-focused.

I have booked a lot of vacations through Priceline ... and generally spending $25-40/ night for some pretty nice hotels. The *only* place that I do not use it is in the state of Nevada where there are usually better deals.

Met a guy a few years back who used Priceline in lieu of renting an apartment ... it was cheaper in the long run.
