We're heading out to see our son this evening and thought we mite like to try Bistro Banlieu. It should be a beautiful nite in the neighborhood, so maybe we can eat out on the patio. We've never been there, can anyone rec it or have any other info re it? How expensive is it? We'd like a nice, sit down type place but don't want to spend a lot , say not over $40 a piece. Should we try other rest in area instead? Son lives in Oak Brook area, so anywhere around there would be fine--thanks!

You should be able to get out for $40 a person, as long as you don't order wine.

Bistro Banelieue is very good, and not spoken of much despite being one of the best bistros in the city... I think it's because of its suburban strip-mall location. A shame, really.

We don't make it out there much (Hemmingway's in Oak Park is closer to my parents and nearly as good), but on my three trips there I rather enjoyed (or my dinner-mates enjoyed) the pate/charcuterie app, which had a chicken pate, foie gras, and assorted meats/mustards/cornichons/etc; the soups are generally very good and very rich; the frites are exceptionally tasty.

My experience is that the reductions and such accompanying the steaks aren't always well-matched, unfortunately. So it may be wise to skip all steak except with frites...

It's been probably two years since my last visit, though, so the menu and cooking may have changed. But my experiences were always very positive.
