Just a note to say the Yelp listings for Cajun boil Bar and for Wild Onion Tied House on South Boulevard in Oak Park have incorrect hours open listing. If you go there, check the hours. They don't open at 11:00 for lunch.

    Losses in The Kingdom :(
    Gone but not forgotten

    Geppetto’s
    Klas
    Riverside Family Restaurant
    Al’s Pizza
    Tonini’s Deli (formerly D’Andrea’s)
    Winberie’s (formerly Cheese Cellar)
    Little Bohemia
Erik’s Danish Delicatessen (before remodel) (then Altiro)

... and not so vintage but still missed...

    Obsessed Kitchen (formerly Kinderhook)

Another pending loss (last day Saturday, February 22, 2020)

    Fair Share Finer Foods
    6226 Roosevelt Rd, Oak Park

    DF25BC7F-669B-45F3-A0B9-02399A81FBD9.jpeg

Was it that outstanding that it is a terrible loss and will be sorely missed? No. I just hate to see another privately owned business go under.

I used to live in the neighborhood, would walk over for milk or bread. Perhaps the one thing that stood out was having a butcher on premises, their prepared foods... I would often get their housemade Italian Beef as I did yesterday (for one last time).

Also in the hot food case they had a potato filled deep fried taco...

Seems like not too long ago, I would hit Fair Share for outer skirt steak for 2.69/lb on the regular for Cinco De Mayo sale price, and buy it ALL.

I also used to love what would be in the bargain bin in the pkgd meat section. My fondest memory was Oscar Mayer bacon for 99 c/lb. There were like 20 pkgs of it, and all of the dates were strangely smudged beyond recognition.

Also - I keep meaning to post that there appears to be another Tacabron location forming on Ogden, east of 1st avenue. It might be the town of Lyons*? The sign is up, and it is identical to the Forest Park sign.

    *website confirmed it.

    It's not in that one.

It's just east of there, and the door doesn't face Ogden, but the sign does. There's a kids' park, and it's on the west end of that kids' park. If I'm seeing it in my mind's eye, it's also JUST west of the Culvers. Blink, and you'll miss the sign. South side of Ogden, west of Culver's, it's a very small non-descript brick building that could maybe house 3 storefronts. The storefronts do not face Ogden tho. Just a sign that says "Tacabron" in black and green on a blank brick wall faces Ogden

Par with the other area hot dog stands (Mickey’s, Micheal’s,).

2 grilled (could of used more crust) patties and a glop of hotdog fixins on top. Not over cooked but missed medium rare as asked. Juicy!

Bun not up to double duty but would be fine on a single.

There is a tradition to give a squirt of water and cover to steam and there was a little too much left. Maybe cook longer but more likely a higher heat.

Sounded like it was prepared the traditional way with a pair of spatulas on the grill.

A big order and a generous pour of toppings. Not just on top but layered.

Supposed to be Nacho but no heat or flavor other than canned cheese.

Skin on fries, single cooked. Will ask for well done next time.

Big chunks of chicken, not much Chipotle flavor or heat. Broth was fine and hearty.

While I was the only one when I arrived it fill up to capacity by the time I left at mid afternoon.

They still have the Subway toppings counter in place so I might hope you can have your sandwich your way.

    Vienna hotdog, Kronos gyros.

A good addition to the neighborhood!

Dang, didn’t last long. Just over a year.

    Greetings, gastronomes!

I've been keeping a list of Oak Park/Forest Park restaurants and bars that have opened and closed since 2007.
There is some missing and incorrect info, I am sure.
Maybe we can maintain a crowd-sourced update.

Photos look good. I'm encouraged. Remarkable how similar the concept/menu is to the last couple of iterations, right down to the fried cheese curds, chilaquiles, and $7 kids meals (come on). The fact that they aren't serving something called "The Oak Pork" from day one is a shonda.

I just picked up a burger from Mickey's for my son - it's his favorite. They are really struggling, losing money every day with the lockdown. The place is usually hopping and I'd guess does OK in normal times, but I imagine their clientele is suffering more than the average Oak Parker. Tonight, they are still running with a full staff and 3 cars in the parking lot at 7pm. We tried to tip, but they said that isn't their thing. Is it a GNR? Maybe not, but it is far better than average fast food and a real local shop. If anyone needs a burger or shake, please...help.

I’m also planning on having a burger for dinner. I’ve had plenty of burgers at Mickey’s and they’re good.

    9399986D-ED3B-44D1-B7A6-6EA7DCD65780.jpeg Big Mickey

Something a little better there is what they call The Poor Boy which might be called a chop steak sandwich at other places.

    5BC9D598-0F69-4FD9-B291-4E697C9C5D58.jpeg Poor Boy

But for date night I’m just thinking of something a little better than the standard burger stand.

Several years ago Berwyn had a Best Burger competition. The Backyard Burger from Cigars and Stripes came in first, Big Guys was near the top but one of my favorites was...

The Ape Hanger from Paisans in Cicero
Grilled jalapeño and onions, Pepper Jack Cheese, Chorizo, Guacamole, Pretzel bun

Sounds like overload but it actually works very well. Besides that, their Wings with Dragon Sauce rates very high in my book as well.

    Paisans Pizzeria & Bar
    6226 Ogden Ave, Berwyn

    All restaurants are suffering. :(

Interesting story behind the Dragon Sauce. An employee accidentally mixed sweet sour sauce with hot sauce. Not ‘blow the back of your head off’ but left my lips tingling.

Very efficient curbside. They have an outside host receiving names at your car and bringing out orders. 5 seconds with the door open.

Burger Moovement on North in Elmwood Park is open for carryout. I also believe they are on Grubhub. I really think their griddled burgers are in the top tier for the whole six county area for their style, and you can load up the toppings too. Excellent fries too too.

Had a pretty good double cheeseburger from...

    Parky's Hot Dogs
329 S Harlem Ave, Forest Park

Nice grill flavor, messy because of a heavy hand with the mayo. Very tasty! I might prefer it over the Big Mickey.

    0B6AF440-644D-4F81-850B-CACC128909B3.jpeg

Since they are cash only presented a minor hiccup for ‘parking lot pickup’ but not too bad. I told her the amount I was paying with and she brought out change with the order.

Recently looking at the McDonald’s app I noticed you can add mayo to any sandwich and besides shredded lettuce you can also add leaf. Their Daily Double was pretty tasty! Leaf lettuce, tomato, onion, mayo, pickle.

Was thinking about curbside pickup for Date Night dinner on Friday. :(

I just made dinner plans based on this post

Hotdog & fries with everything and a Big Mickey hit the spot!

Noticed that lot was empty a few times, I didn't even think they were open. I think it would really help if they did a limited menu of their most popular with online ordering (and paying) and curbside pickup.

Looks like La Bella in Oak Park is not planning to re-open.
