It wasn't quite a ghost town but Chinatown was notably empty for a Friday night. In fact, and not surprisingly, at just before 9, we pulled right up to a parking place directly in front of JMC and strolled right in. And the rest of that block of Cermak was fairly wide open. JMC wasn't empty, but there was just one other party -- non-Chinese regulars -- dining in, and a few carry-outs during our time there. Food and service were great, as usual. We ordered a few of our favorites and a few dishes we'd never had before. Since item numbers seem to vary between the printed menus and the menus at JMC's website, I'm not going to bother trying to list them here since it might just lead to confusion . . .
Ox Tendon & Maw in Chili SauceProbably my favorite take on one of my very favorite dishes. I'm likely to order this one every time I go.
Chong Qing Popcorn ChickenFinally had the dish kuhdo described in the opening post! It was every bit as great as it looks and sounds. Crispy mini-nuggets of fried chicken and ultra-crispy, crinkle-cut fries, all fried in a fiery, dry-chili-fueled oil. What's not to love?
Cucumber With Tofu SkinI enjoyed some aspects of this dish but in the end it was just too salty for me.
West Lake Beef SoupA great, elemental soup that I'd never had before. Basically, a rich and flavorful, gelatinous egg-drop soup with ground beef in it. Really tasty.
Hot & Spicy ShrimpHead-on, perfectly fried and damned spicy. Another winner.
House Special Lamb RibsVery good but not as enjoyable as during previous visits. I loved the cumin-y flavor, but the ribs' exteriors were a little soft and the pieces were so small they felt more like pieces than ribs.
Overall, another really enjoyable meal at Szechwan JMC.
