Since I have been going there about 10-11 Years. I remember at first I thought to myself Boy I hope she has more than one. Became obvious that it is almost like a Uniform /trademark 8) Love this family and their business not to mention their food!

A word of caution with the weather turning colder and eating El Trunko isn't a good option. This place is on the small side and only has three 4-top tables and one 2-top so you may be dining across from a stranger (which is not a big deal to many people). Personally when I go back, I am not going during the lunch rush to make sure I can sit somewhere. On my recent first visit all the tables were full, but a couple were finishing up literally the moment I got my food.

Last I was at Mr. D's, Tuesday, tables were full with one fellow at a 4-top. I politely asked if I could sit with him, he said sure, of course. At which point Mr. D said he comes almost every day and someone new sits with him. Friendly fellow, we both lingered longer than intended, his conversation and company made lunch even more enjoyable.

Son of D's brought out an order of nicely crisp fries for us to split, after our lunches were long gone, to munch on while we chatted.

Was at Mr. D's last Friday, no tables, a gentleman who was at a four top alone waved us over and invited us to join him. So cool. We had driven out from the city, this guy was doing a side job nearby and headed to his 2-10 shift in Morton Grove so he ordered a cheeseburger to take for his "lunch" at 6! We had a great chat which made the cuisine all that much more enjoyable.

El Trunko is nice. But nothing wrong sitting in your car with the heater (or A/C) and the radio playing.

I wouldn't let lack of seating ever enter into the decision process. Now, lack of parking, that's another story :D

Went back for the first time in a while, I love this place. Parking has gotten kind of tricky, with better luck on Diversey than in the neighborhood. I think the signs/zoning have changed.

The same exact thing happened to me about a year ago right down to the free order of fries, only difference was that Mike brought them over. The really nice guy I was sharing the table with said "you must come here a lot too"

Walked in to Mr. D's today straight-up noon with a buddy, busy as a paper glider making monkey at the Oshkosh EAA airshow. Friendly happy line went fast, 94% were take-away and we had no trouble getting a table.

Tip-top steak sandwiches, crisp fries, punchy giardiniera, Mrs. D wearing a light green shirt. All right with the world.

Actually, no. Not until you mentioned this.
But it must be accurate, judging by this one photograph (from 18 September). Image

A friend went here for the beef and commented it was a little light on the beef for $6.60. In the same camp as Johnnie’s.

He enjoyed the sandwich very much.

    I wouldn’t be able to not get the steak though living within 15 minutes of Johnnie’s, Freddie’s, Novi’s, Scatchell’s, Serrelli’s, Albano’s, ... and even Portillo’s.

I’ll bet if I looked at a map there would be even more.

Not many good steak sandwiches nearby. Mr D’s might be the closest great steak sandwich at a half hour drive.

I mentioned in the "Best Italian Beef" thread that I was at Mr. D's yesterday and had another beef. Once again it was great and both times I've had it I didn't have a problem with the amount of beef in it. John did you get the beef? You mentioned your friend did but what about you? You really need to try it once. It's right at the top with any of the best you've had. My brother tried the steak and loved it. I guess I'll give the steak a try next time but I rarely order steak sandwiches.

I never really enjoyed a steak sandwich since they usually show up at state fairs, concert venues, carnivals and similar places where the food is not the focus. Tough, dry cubes of under seasoned beef which pull right out with the first bite (bad bite-through as they say in the competition BBQ world). But Mr D’s steak sandwich is not like that, it’s delicious! Flame grilled beef with just enough chew to be satisfying, but tender enough for a clean bite. The spoonful of gravy softens the bread and brings the whole thing together. Really simple sandwich that’s much more than the sum of its parts.

To be honest it’s not much to look at, but the awesome flame grilled flavor of the sandwich belies its plain jane looks:

By the way, does anyone know what cut of steak they use at Mr D’s? To me it seems like a thin cut ribeye that’s run through a needler. I'll ask them next time I'm there.

My brother asked me this after he had his Friday. My first guess would be a rib-eye and they definitely put them through the needler as I saw them up close coming out of the back.

Even the greats have exceptional days, Mr. D's Shish Kabobs hit the cover off the ball today. Fries, crisp exterior leading to fluffy potato perfection. Tender meaty steak, bright onions, even typically so-so tomatoes tasted good. Mr. D working his magic grill, Mrs. D wearing a green shirt, young D an in motion conduit between the two.

May have been one of you, but I just saw this:

Just talked to Mike aka Mr. D of Mr. D’s Shish-Kabobs. They’ve been closed since mid March. The plan is to reopen June 1st. Probably the last spot you’ll ever see on Tock.

Wasn't me but should have been. I called Mr. D's for a pickup a few days ago and he said he was closed near term. I meant to post.

I'm happy as a liquored up penguin that Mr. D's is reopening. I loves me some Mr. D's

Great to hear. When I think of small mom and pop type joints that could be hurt by the current events they come to mind. But they are the kind of place that could do the take out thing right. I wish them well.
