Here's an odd one – a bar specializing in barbecue, overlooking the tarmac of a small south suburban airport. A couple months ago I enjoyed a pint of Off Square IPA (from Crown Point), snacked on pulled pork, and watched a tiny Cessna take off.
Lansing Municipal Airport – the Chicago area's oldest – is home to the innovative Ford Hangar, designed in the mid-1920s by Alfred Kahn and now
on the National Register of Historic Places. Both Amelia Earhart and Charles Lindbergh used the airport. Small private planes make up most of the traffic, but IGQ (how did it get that code?) also serves as a blimp base where some of the airships that cruise over local sporting events are moored.
Lynnie Que's is on the second floor of a newer building just south of the hangar (background right of first photo). Seating areas on either side of the central bar offer views of the runways. I liked the feel of the place, partly because of the unusual view and also because of the steady buzz of conversation issuing from the moderate crowd on a snowy Saturday afternoon. People seemed to be enjoying themselves.
A plate of pulled pork with two sides ($10) seemed like a good way to test the waters. Without being asked, they thoughtfully split our order (the photo shows one of two plates).
I wish I had better things to say, really I do, but it was one bland and mushy plate of food. The pork seemed almost as if it had been steamed, and the corn souffle and green bean casserole were likewise nearly devoid of taste or texture. One of the sauces was unusual and tasty. I poured it over everything on the plate and that helped.
Despite the disappointing food, I actually look forward to returning. I liked the friendly and quirky atmosphere quite a bit. A burger or Sloppy Joe might be the way to go.
