We ordered a box of donuts from Stan's this weekend.

The cake donuts were much better than the bismarcks. The orange chocolate in particular was delicious.

I have found that simple is best here. The chocolate glazed yeast doughnut I had this weekend is one of the better doughnuts I have had in Chicago.

Get ready for two more Stan's Donuts locations on May 21 at 6:30 a.m. The popular mini-chain will unveil the new Lakeview shop (3300 N. Broadway) and one on the Mag Mile (carving out part of Labriola Ristorante at 535 N. Michigan) on that day, and similar to previous Stan's openings, the first 100 customers will be eligible for prizes including free doughnuts for life. You may want to start lining up now.

While Old Fashioned Donuts Apple Fritter is my idea of heaven on earth it is quite difficult for me to 11248 S Michigan Ave, probably just slightly less so than my getting into Heaven after I shuffle off this mortal coil.

Cue Stan's Donuts with multiple easier to get-to locations. I like their apple fritters and very much like their old fashioned donuts, in particular lemon pistachio and orange.

My wife and I got two donuts from Stan’s at Oakbrook Center’s relatively new food court. She got the lemon pistachio and I the caramel marshmallow pocket. The lemon pistachio was pretty good though the caramel marshmallow was too sweet. If I lived closer I might go again, but they’re nowhere near as good as Doughnut Vault.

I haven't been to Stan's in at least a few months, but I live near the Oak Brook location and am glad to see some love upthread for their chocolate-orange donuts. Love them. I also like the orange cake donut, and my 7-year old swears by the cinnamon sugar cake donuts.

While the trip to the far southside is reserved for trips to Indiana and beyond the same recipe can be found at...

    Mr. B's Old Fashioned Donuts
    2815, 25 S Pulaski Rd, Chicago

Not the same size though and the walnut variation has them sprinkled on top rather than baked in.

But I digress, we will often make a stop at...

    Stan's Donuts
    1560 N Damen Ave, Chicago

... when on business in the area.

The donuts are great but the neighborhood vibe inside is really attractive. Seats along the window counter, a few 2 tops, and a communal table (where we often sit).

People of all ages, kids, coming and going, coming and sitting. Always a great visit. :)

I found that the Mr.B's version didn't come close to the original. While I appreciated the less sweet glaze, there was none of the buttery richness that makes the original OFD product so special.

Inspired by the unfortunate news that the original Stan's shuttered forever, I stopped by the West Lake Street location of Chicago Stan's yesterday. I got there around 1:00 and the place had been virtually wiped out by people getting a jump on Easter.

In order of preference, pictured above are blueberry cream cheese, maple long john, and chocolate frosted. Stan's Chicago remains my most frequented and second favorite (Doughnut Vault) of the fancy Chicago donuts.
