As long as we're all just speculating here, when I drove by yesterday it looked like they had a good month to go. And of course, one can never predict how quickly or slowly the City will fulfill their part, either.

Sorry to just speculate but I didn't feel comfortable whipping out my phone to record the conversation. It won't happen again.

LOL - we're all just speculating, including the recent piece in the Tribune.

I'm trying to figure out when I can get drunk enough to make a return visit. I've learned over the years that my enjoyment of the place suffers a bit when not preceded by an aggressive pre-game session. As my son said to me recently, "you don't go to Diner Grill, you end up there." Pretty wise words for such a youngster.

While I agree Lucas is wise beyond his years, a fact of which I have mentioned to Ellen more than once, my Diner Grill perspective differs.

When I first moved to Chicago, 35+ years ago, I lived off Irving and Lake Shore and reverse commuted to the near northern burbs every work day for a suit and tie job. Super early breakfast at Diner Grill twice a week or more. As time went on, and jobs and lifestyle changed, I was always a regular or semi regular, though hours were different.

Diner Grill holds memories for me, two of which stand out. Though, like many great meal memories, they have little to do with what was on the plate.

One early morning Diner Grill breakfast there was a fellow diner, stone sober by the way, picking at his Slinger. We got to chatting, turned out he was military and going overseas for the first time the next day. We got to chatting, laughing, his appetite picked up. I bought his breakfast, shook his hand, wished him well and said I'd think a good thought for him. Then there were the 5am exotic dancers putting on an booze fueled impromptu show, another fond memory.

Happy to have Diner Grill Back, Count me a Fan!

Thanks, Gary, for sharing your memories of DG. I too have fond memories of Diner Grill, including one a few years back when, at the very end of a friend's marathon bachelor party, I arrived in darkness and had to don my sunglasses as I left. Sunrise at The Diner Grill is truly a special experience. I don't remember what I ate that time but most definitely, some very good times. 8)

So, last night was the night and I completely blew it. I was so drunk, I forgot to go to Diner Grill. Oh well, another time.

A pinnacle of personal achievement, I finally got drunk enough -- and remembered -- to go to Diner Grill. And I was rewarded for my effort . . .

Diner Grill, minus the old "Dinner Grill" sign

    Image
    Chile
As bland as all get out but pretty much how I remembered it.

    Image
    Slinger
Ordered by my son. It was his inaugural visit.

    Image
    Slinger, no more
    Truly a 'proud papa' moment!

    Image
Ham & Cheese Omelet w/Hash Browns
My standard order. Sorry, I starting eating before I remembered to get the shot but you get the idea. The omelet was cooked very nicely and the ham seemed better than what remembered. It was less sweet. The hash browns were tasty, too. Satisfying and piping hot.

    Image
    Rye Toast
I guess I was drunk enough that I didn't mind eating the burnt half first! 8)

    Image
    Sausage Links
These were also very tasty. There are 3 links to an order. I think I had that third one in my mouth while I was taking this shot.

Maybe it was the alcohol talking, but overall, I thought the food was far better than I remembered it. I'm not sure there's any amount of hot sauce in the world (or other fixin's) that can save that chile but the omelet, hash browns and sausage were quite good. All in all, really glad to have Diner Grill back.
