Admittedly, I had my doubts but I live sooo close, I just had to try it. So, on a recent stroll over to Walgreens, we stopped in and placed a trial order . . .

I didn't know it was even possible to get chips like this anywhere other than a ballpark, and especially in Logan Square, but there they are. Guacamole was fine. We also tried 4 tacos (carne asada, chorizo, al pastor and chicken) none of which, unfortunately, rose above the beeping of the microwave I heard while they were preparing our order. The word "grill" is in the name but I saw no evidence of any grill in use during our visit, which was at approximately noon on a weekday. The place was devoid of customers, save for one gentleman ahead of us, also placing a carry-out order.

This was really dry and bland, and frankly, looked and tasted like some pre-fab chicken that comes out of a bag one stores in the freezer.

The entire experience left me scratching my head and wondering what the objective is here. There's a lot of great Mexican food in Logan Square, so I think it's going to be a struggle for this place unless they really up their game. Maybe they think the location is just so stellar that it will make up for everything else.

Seeing as L'Patron departed over a rent dispute, it's hard to imagine any other taqueria being able to grind out the monthly nut, much less prosper, in this space. But no other industry breeds optimists quite like the restaurant biz, so mazel tov to Chikis, and to Grill!

Not surprisingly, Chikis 'N Grill has closed.
